Raju Narayana Swamy, IAS (Malayalam: രാജു നാരായണ സ്വാമി) is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer. He is presently Secretary, General Education, Government of Kerala.[1][2]

Early life

Narayana Swamy was born into a middle class Kerala Iyer family from Changanassery, Kerala, India. He has a bachelors degree in Computer Science from Indian Institute of Technology Madras.

Education

Mr. Swamy was a student of Sacred Heart High School in Changanacherry, Kerala. He stood first in Kerala in Secondary School Leaving Certificate examination. Two years later, He topped the Predegree examination in MG University.

Mr. Narayanaswamy ranked tenth in IIT-JEE. He graduated in Computer Science, from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras and was the topper of his batch. He also secured the first rank in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, conducted for admission to postgraduate courses in India.

In 1991, he got the first rank in Civil Services Examination and entered the Indian Administrative Service.

Career

Narayana Swamy's career has been marked with political controversies.After serving in the Indian Administrative Service for about a decade he was forced to take a one-year compulsory leave. This was after he issued a notice to convene a meeting of the Kerala State Co-operative Marketing Federation's board of directors in compliance with an order of the Kerala High Court. He was also forced to take a temporary leave after he protested against his posting under an IAS officer two years his junior. After the V. S. Achuthanandan led LDF government came into power in Kerala, Narayana Swamy was appointed as the collector of Idukki district and was given charge of Munnar land evacuations.[3] During his investigations, he inquired into an illegal land deal by the son and daughter of the Public Works Minister T. U. Kuruvilla who had to resign over the issue. He also proceeded against the former Minister P.J. Joseph and his relatives regarding their alleged illegal landholdings. The Kerala Government shifted him soon after issue, claiming complaints against him. The Chief Minister, in response denied that the transfer was over his actions taken against the politicians.

Narayana Swamy is a prolific writer with 23 books to his credit. His work Santhimantram Muzhangunna Thazvarayil (Travelogue) won the 2004 Kerala Sahitya Akademi award.[3] Among his recent works include Niram Mangiya Vazhithara, which is a translation of The Road of Lost Innocence, the English version of the French memoirs by Somaly Mam. Thakarnna maniyum nilakkaatha nadavum is his critical study of the life and works of Malayalam poet Edappally Raghavan Pillai, who committed suicide at a young age. He also has a passion for Mathematics and Physics which he opted as subjects for the Civil Services Examination.[4]
